How do wood intumescent coatings work?

Wood is a natural material that offers many advantages for building design and construction. It’s strong, versatile, renewable, and aesthetically pleasing. However, in the event of a fire it's highly flammable. Intumescent coatings enhance the fire resistance of interior wood ceilings, walls, partitions, features and timber structural components. This can slow the spread of fire, and buy more time for safe evacuation, and for the fire brigade to contain the fire.

When exposed to high temperatures or fire, an intumescent coating undergoes a chemical reaction causing it to expand, forming an insulating char layer. This acts as a protective barrier against fire, delaying the transfer of heat to the underlying wood substrate and providing additional time for fire suppression. Intumescent coatings help reduce the production of smoke and toxic gases generated by treated wood during a fire, improving visibility, aiding evacuation and reducing the health risks associated with toxic smoke inhalation. Intumescent coatings also help preserve the structural integrity of wood, potentially preventing structural failure or collapse during a fire. Intumescent coatings' effectiveness can depend on factors such as coating thickness, application quality and specific fire scenarios.
